Well, that escalated quickly.
President Donald Trump has been in office all of a few weeks, and in that short period of time, it appears that more than one leader is coming around to his vision of an expanded, more secure United States.
According to a report from Fox News, José Raúl Mulino, who is the current president of Panama, has agreed to terminate a development deal with China in favor of deeper cooperation with the United States.
As Trump had rightfully pointed out, the Panama Canal was becoming a truly weak link in national security, especially with the Chinese Communist Party aggressively pursuing its interests in the critical infrastructure.
Beijing was attempting to ensnare the Panama Canal even more deeply into its Belt and Road Initiative, though these plans were upended with the arrival of Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
“Had the pleasure of meeting the incredible @USEmbPAN team during my first embassy meet and greet in my new role as Secretary of State! Thankful for their dedication and ongoing efforts to promoting President Trump’s vision of an America First foreign policy,” Rubio tweeted.
Indeed. Especially as Rubio was able to receive reassurances that Panama would begin cooperating with the United States, rather than China, more deeply in the future.
“I met with Panamanian President @JoseRaulMulino and Foreign Minister @javierachapma to make clear that the United States cannot, and will not, allow the Chinese Communist Party to continue with its effective and growing control over the Panama Canal area. We also discussed efforts to end the hemisphere’s mass migration crisis and ensure fair competition for U.S. firms,” Rubio declared in a separate tweet, highlighting yet another win for the Trump administration.
On his part, the Panamanian president was also amenable to Rubio’s overtures.
“I think this visit opens the door to build new relations … and try to increase as much as possible U.S. investments in Panama,” Mulino asserted.
Hence the Panama Canal Repurchase Act, which was introduced by Republican Representative Dusty Johnson.
Johnson, who hails from South Dakota, is a member of the Select Committee on China and the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.
“President Trump is right to consider repurchasing the Panama Canal. China’s interest in and presence around the canal is a cause for concern. America must project strength abroad – owning and operating the Panama Canal might be an important step towards a stronger America and a more secure globe,” Johnson detailed.
Quite right.
A stronger America would also result in a more well-protected Latin America as well, absent outside interference from foreign forces.
At this point in time, however, at least the MAGA movement has gained even more teeth through its successful negotiation with Panama over the weekend, much to the anger of legacy media outlets eager to see Trump fail.
However, those outlets can continue to grind their teeth while Trump continues to win.
After all, Trump is not only winning in the present – he will clearly be winning well into the future, when history records his breakneck pace in resolving multiple challenges within a month of his entering the Oval Office once again.
Just imagine how much winning could have occurred had Trump been in power in 2020 … though at least he is back in power now.
