In an unfortunate turn of events, it would appear that the peace deal between Russia and Ukraine has hit another serious snag.
As detailed by the New York Post, Russian President Vladimir Putin reportedly launched the biggest attack on Ukraine in a year, striking Kyiv and killing at least nine people.
Naturally, President Donald Trump was quite upset by this turn of events, turning to his social media platform to castigate the Russian leader.
In a truth social post, Trump unequivocally ordered Putin to stop, reminding him once again of the critical importance of getting a peace deal done.
“I am not happy with the Russian strikes on KYIV. Not necessary, and very bad timing. Vladimir, STOP! 5000 soldiers a week are dying. [Let’s] get the Peace Deal DONE!” Trump declared.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is also quite upset by this turn of events, effectively blasting the United States by declaring it had allowed Russia to continue attacking Ukraine with impunity over the last 44 days.
“This was a proposal from the United States … And it has been 44 days of Russia continuing to kill our people and evading tough pressure and accountability for its actions,” Zelensky declared.
And, given the severity of the latest attack, a peace deal may be very unfortunately elusive for quite some time.
Or this possibility was certainly raised by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who is showing diminished optimism regarding the success of any peace agreement.
However, it was Rubio who made the most startling remarks at all, especially when considering how sharply they have diverged from prior positions.
“We have a better understanding of (the Russian position) now – because we’ve actually spoken to them after three years of not speaking to them – what is the Ukrainian position, and figure out, ‘are these guys even in the same neighborhood because of their completely different zip codes?’” Rubio remarked.
Fair point.
After all, China, India, and other nations have certainly been listening to Russia for years, and that relationship-building could come at the cost of the United States being in a weaker bargaining position.
At this point, so much time has passed that peace appears even more elusive, which is a travesty for all parties involved.
In particular the parties most vulnerable to the whims of politicians.
Which are oftentimes not exactly “for the people.”
Rubio then declared a rather frightening remark.
“We may have to conclude that they’re so far apart that peace is impossible at this time,” Rubio proclaimed.
Rubio did express some optimism, especially when he made it clear that the administration has a strong interest in the war ending.
“I’m hopeful that we can get to something quickly. And I remain hopeful that we can get something done because this is a terrible war and it needs to end,” Rubio asserted.
With any luck, such a deal will occur, for the benefit of the entire planet.
