Tom Homan, the man President Trump appointed to help fix our broken border, just sent a clear message to sanctuary cities like New York: Start following the law, or step aside and let someone else do it. In a recent interview, Homan made it plain—if cities won’t cooperate with federal immigration agents, then ICE will still do its job. And that job is to protect the American people.
Let’s be clear—immigration enforcement isn’t optional. It’s not about feelings or politics. It’s about law. The Constitution gives the federal government the power to control our borders and enforce immigration rules. That means cities and mayors don’t get to decide which laws they feel like obeying.
Homan told Fox News that operations are already underway across the country, and more are coming. He said, “I plan on being in New York City in the near future. We’re gonna do operations in New York City.” That’s because, as a sanctuary city, New York refuses to help ICE catch illegal aliens—even violent criminals. This isn’t just bad policy. It’s dangerous.
Mayor Adams in New York once cooperated with ICE at Rikers Island, the city’s main jail. That allowed federal agents to arrest criminals before they were released back into the streets. But now, like many Democrat leaders, he’s backing away. Homan says that needs to change. If city leaders won’t help, then ICE will increase its presence anyway.
Some politicians are upset about this. Representative Alma Adams from North Carolina complained that ICE didn’t tell her everything about their plans in Charlotte. But Homan had a strong answer. He said, “She can dislike it all she wants… but if she doesn’t want [to help], stand to the side and watch us do your job.”
That’s exactly right. Elected officials swear an oath to uphold the law. If someone breaks into your home, you expect the police to come. It’s the same with illegal immigration. When people break into our country, ICE needs to do its job—and they shouldn’t be blocked by mayors or governors.
In Houston, Texas, ICE recently arrested over 3,500 criminal illegal aliens in just six weeks. That includes murderers, child predators, and drunk drivers. Nine child rapists were arrested on the very first day. This happened because law enforcement in Houston helped ICE do its job. That’s what cooperation looks like—and it makes communities safer.
Homan explained that ICE will go wherever the threats are, even if the cities are run by Democrats. “Sanctuary cities, we’re flooding the zone,” he said, because those are the places letting criminals back into the streets. That’s a public safety crisis, and it must end.
Even San Francisco, long known for its sanctuary policies, is starting to change. Homan said he spoke with their mayor and told him they’ll be watching closely. If local leaders really go after the worst criminals, ICE might hold back. But if they fail, Homan and President Trump will not hesitate to step in.
This is not about politics. It’s about protecting Americans. Just recently, ICE caught an illegal alien from Uzbekistan who was driving an 18-wheeler. He had a commercial driver’s license, even though he was wanted in his home country for terrorism. How did someone like that get into our country and onto our roads? It’s shocking—and it proves why strong enforcement is needed.
Tom Homan is right. Under President Trump, we have the most secure border in our nation’s history. That’s because this administration is enforcing the law the way the Constitution requires. Cities that refuse to cooperate are putting lives at risk. But thankfully, the law still stands—and people like Homan are making sure it gets enforced.
If mayors don’t want to help, they should step aside. America’s safety comes first.
