Well, that just got supremely awkward.
According to a stunning report from Fox News, none other than District Attorney Letitia James, best known for weaponizing the state’s judicial resources against the then Republican candidate for president, Donald Trump.
Given that James is well known for prosecting Trump over fraud, it is a bit inconvenient when accusations of fraud against her start to surface.
“New York Attorney General Letitia James has been hit with shocking allegations by the Trump administration, accusing her of mortgage fraud … In documents obtained by Fox News Channel’s ‘The Ingraham Angle,’ the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) sent a criminal referral to the Department of Justice, accusing James of mortgage fraud,” Fox News reported.
Unbelievable, truly.
This development is so crazy, it may as well have been scripted for TV.
Just consider how much crazier the story gets.
“FHFA Director William Pulte said in a letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi that James appears to have falsified records to meet certain lending requirements and receive favorable loan terms …
Pulte cited a property in Virginia that James allegedly claimed as her principal residence and a property in New York she claimed as a four-unit structure instead of five, which he said could mean she was able to get a different and more favorable loan,” Fox News reported.
At that point, it’s pretty obvious what’s happened.
Fox News contributor and George Washington University law professor Jonathan Turley was certainly beside himself.
Truly, how could one not be, in light of this blatant corruption?
“This is a person who prosecuted Trump for everything short of ripping a label off a mattress, and among the charges that were brought in New York, in just the civil but the criminal case, was making false or misleading statements to financial institutions,” Turley remarked.
That’s putting it mildly. Indeed, Ms. James was all over Trump like white was over rice, in a clear effort to preclude him from running for the presidency.
In fact, she was even in Trump’s crosshairs mere days ago, when she decided to join a lawsuit against the Trump administration regarding at least $1B in post-pandemic federal relief funds.
Indeed, as reported by Newsweek, James has been all in on more than one “get Trump” effort.
“New York Attorney General Letitia James is leading a coalition of Democratic state attorneys general in suing the Trump administration to stop it from cutting off access to more than $1 billion in funding to address the long-term effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on K-12 students,” Newsweek reported.
Madi Biedermann, a spokesperson for the Department of Education, is reportedly all on board for having all waste minimized.
“COVID is over. States and school districts can no longer claim they are spending their emergency pandemic funds on ‘COVID relief’ when there are numerous documented examples of abuse and misuse,” Biedermann noted.
All the more reason for previously designated funds to be reallocated properly.
Even if, unfortunately, such scrutiny leads to the discovery of wrongdoing on behalf of the prosecutor.
“As for James, if we apply the Letitia James standard that she created, there’d be little question here. This seems pretty straightforward,” Turley declared.
Straightforward, indeed. One can only wonder …
Especially as the evidence regarding fraudulent paths taken by Republican adversaries continues to mount.
