Well, that escalated quickly.
While on the campaign trail throughout 2024, then-presidential candidate Donald Trump made it rather clear that he would be in favor of investigating individuals who played a key role in promulgating ostensible “Russian collusion” throughout his presidency.
One of those individuals includes former FBI Director James Comey, who fell into Trump’s crosshairs following his support of various Russian collusion theories.
In fact, as noted by Politico in 2018, Comey reportedly “suggested that it is ‘possible’ that salacious allegations about the president and prostitutes in Moscow are true.”
Naturally, Trump did not respond favorably at the time, lashing out against Comey on Twitter, prior to tech mogul Elon Musk’s takeover.
In essence, not only did Trump fire Comey, but he publicly castigated him as well.
“James Comey is a proven LEAKER & LIAR. Virtually everyone in Washington thought he should be fired for the terrible job he did-until he was, in fact, fired. He leaked CLASSIFIED information, for which he should be prosecuted. He lied to Congress under OATH … He is a weak and untruthful slime ball who was, as time has proven, a terrible Director of the FBI. His handling of the Crooked Hillary Clinton case, and the events surrounding it, will go down as one of the worst ‘botch jobs’ of history. It was my great honor to fire James Comey!” Trump angrily remarked.
Now, it would appear that Trump has opted to take things even further, as evidenced by the latest investigation initiated by the FBI.
As reported by the New York Post, both Comey and former CIA Director John Brennan are now under criminal investigation due to “potential wrongdoing” related to the Trump-Russia collusion probe, at least in part due to “allegedly making false statements.”
That said, the reasons underlying the investigation into Comey have not been made entirely clear, as an anonymous source “could not share details of what specifically was being probed.”
That said, Comey probably did not help his case by making an ill-advised social media post that purportedly encouraged violence against Trump.
The reasoning for investigating Brennan was articulated far more clearly, particularly in terms of his apparent deference to “narrative consistency” over any counter-evidence, regardless of how credible.
According to a new review recently released by the CIA, Brennan apparently misled the public through including information that may or may not have been credible, all in favor of supporting “narrative consistency” … even though others protested that the inclusion of potentially untruthful information would threaten “the credibility of the entire paper.”
“Despite these objections, Brennan showed a preference for narrative consistency over analytical soundness. When confronted with specific flaws in the Dossier by the two mission center leaders – one with extensive operational experience and the other with a strong analytic background – he appeared more swayed by the Dossier’s general conformity with existing theories than by legitimate tradecraft concerns,” the CIA review noted.
And, perhaps most problematically in terms of potential criminal prosecution, the new review noted that Brennan effectively doubled down on his support of any and all information that would support the “narrative consistency” regarding Trump’s apparent collusion with Russia.
“Brennan ultimately formalized his position in writing, stating that ‘my bottom line is that I believe that the information warrants inclusion in the report,’” the review added.
Now, it would appear that the “bottom line” of the Trump administration, including newly appointed FBI Director Kash Patel, is to prosecute all influential individuals who played a hand in deploying “Trump-Russia” collusion across the public consciousness.
