Trump Scores Takes Aim At National Security-Threatening Supply Chain

With each passing day, President Donald Trump reminds Americans, again and again, of why it is so important for pro-American candidates to win.

Seems funny to describe a candidate for the United States presidential office as “pro-American,” as one would assume pro-American is mandatory.

Alas, the Dems have revealed their anti-American fervor in various ways, which is precisely why today’s leaders – such as President Donald Trump – must proudly and unashamedly express their patriotism.

And some of the best forms of patriotism are evident in military service and national security, both of which aim to enhance the safety of everybody.

Needless to say, Trump’s pro-American, pro-national security policies are on full display in one of his latest executive orders, which targets a critical vulnerability in the copper supply chain.

The executive order – “Addressing the Threat to National Security from Imports of Copper” – highlights the various ways in which copper is a clear “weak link” in national security while simultaneously recommending actions designed to counteract major security risks.

“Copper is a critical material essential to the national security, economic strength, and industrial resilience of the United States.  Copper, scrap copper, and copper’s derivative products play a vital role in defense applications, infrastructure, and emerging technologies, including clean energy, electric vehicles, and advanced electronics,” the order began.

Without a doubt. Yet another area of national security that languished under the previous administration.

“The United States faces significant vulnerabilities in the copper supply chain, with increasing reliance on foreign sources for mined, smelted, and refined copper. The United States has ample copper reserves, yet our smelting and refining capacity lags significantly behind global competitors,” the order continued.

Indeed, it does. Which is precisely why the Trump administration has promptly snapped to attention.

“A single foreign producer dominates global copper smelting and refining, controlling over 50 percent of global smelting capacity and holding four of the top five largest refining facilities,” the order added.

In other words, China.

“The United States’ increasing dependence on foreign sources of copper … necessitate action under section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act to determine whether imports of copper, scrap copper, and copper’s derivative products threaten to impair national security,” the order proclaimed.

About darn time. Especially as economic competition intensifies while military alliances continue to navigate deeply turbulent geopolitical complexities.

The executive order also outlines required actions, including reports regarding the degree to which copper imports to the United States threaten national security.

In addition, the order calls for “policy recommendations for strengthening the United States copper supply chain through strategic investments, permitting reforms, and enhanced recycling initiatives,” alongside “recommendations on actions to mitigate such threats, including potential tariffs, export controls, or incentives to increase domestic production.”

In doing so, the order will achieve one of the many objectives of the Trump administration: “to ensure a reliable, secure, and resilient domestic copper supply chain.”

The order may be read in its entirety here.

Frankly, Trump’s executive order does not come a moment too soon.

Indeed, just last year, multiple media outlets published a flurry of articles regarding the major risks of extreme overreliance upon other nations for copper smelting and refining.

Indeed, while the United States has an ample supply of raw copper, it currently lags behind other nations in terms of key processes on the copper supply chain, which consists of the following steps: mining, smelting and refining, semi-fabricating, and manufacturing.

Well, the United States lags behind one nation in particular – China, as strongly implied by the executive order.

Nick Pickens, Research Director of Global Mining at Wood Mackenzie, notes the clear risks of such an overreliance, especially as other nations attempt to diversify their global supply chains outside of China.

“Based on our projections, there will be an additional 8.6Mt of copper demand outside China over the next decade. This demand represents 70% of smelter capability and 55% of fabricator capacity in the rest of the world. As governments and manufacturers aim to diversify away from China, it is crucial to consider the entire supply chain, not just mining operations,” Pickens declared.

Naturally, Comrade Kamala didn’t bother to campaign on something as concrete as copper security; on the contrary, she opted to campaign on the rather nebulous “politics of joy.”

Whatever that means.

Regardless, it is fortunate that the comrade lost the election in an epic fashion, as it is unlikely that she would have passed an executive order regarding the national security risks of overreliance on copper.

Heck, Comrade Kamala apparently didn’t even recognize the national security risks of millions upon millions stampeding the border, so it’s doubtful she would have expanded her horizons further.

Very fortunately for all Americans, the Trump administration not only has its eye on the ball, but its eye on multiple balls simultaneously, further improving national security.

Frankly, with all Trump has achieved in approximately five weeks, imagine how much more he will achieve in five months …
